Faster MRI could replace CT scans for liver cancer survivors
NCT ID NCT06537193
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a shorter, contrast-enhanced MRI scan can detect liver cancer recurrence as well as standard CT scans in people who have been cancer-free for over two years after treatment. About 455 participants will receive both scans to compare their accuracy. The goal is to find a safer screening method that reduces radiation and contrast agent risks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
gadoxetic acid (Primovist)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a safer, faster, and equally effective way to monitor liver cancer survivors for recurrence, reducing radiation exposure and contrast agent risks.
What could go wrong
This is a diagnostic accuracy study, not a treatment trial. The abbreviated MRI may not detect all recurrences, and results may not apply to all patient groups or settings.
