Weekly shot may halt arthritis progression in kids
NCT ID NCT03841357
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a weekly injection of abatacept (Orencia) plus usual care could prevent juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) from spreading to more joints or causing eye inflammation. 121 children with recent-onset JIA affecting 4 or fewer joints took part. The goal was to see if 24 weeks of treatment could keep the disease from becoming more severe over 18 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Abatacept (Orencia) injection
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a way to stop early-stage juvenile arthritis from becoming more severe, reducing the need for stronger medications.
- What could go wrong
- This is a completed Phase 3 trial, but results may not apply to all children. Abatacept can increase infection risk and other side effects.
