Could 5 days of tamiflu be enough to stop the flu?

NCT ID NCT07496736

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares a 5-day versus a 10-day course of oseltamivir (Tamiflu) to prevent influenza in people exposed to the virus while in the hospital. About 200 adults with flu risk factors will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatment lengths. The goal is to see if the shorter course works just as well.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

oseltamivir

What this could lead to

If successful, a shorter 5-day course could be just as effective as 10 days for preventing flu after exposure, reducing side effects and costs.

What could go wrong

This is a non-inferiority trial, so it may show the shorter course is slightly less effective. Results may not apply to people outside hospitals or those with severe illness.
