3D camera could sharpen colonoscopy accuracy
NCT ID NCT06922877
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This completed trial tested whether a 3D imaging device helps doctors more accurately classify colon polyps and adenomas during colonoscopy compared to standard 2D imaging. 460 adults with colorectal polyps were randomly assigned to either 3D or 2D imaging before polyp removal. The goal was to see if 3D improves diagnostic accuracy, using pathology as the gold standard. Participants were followed for 30 days to track any side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
3-dimensional imaging device
What this could lead to
If successful, 3D imaging could help doctors more accurately identify polyps during colonoscopy, potentially reducing the need for repeat procedures.
What could go wrong
This is a single-center study with 460 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The technology may not significantly improve accuracy over standard 2D imaging.
