New radiation drug takes on chemo in prostate cancer showdown
NCT ID NCT04663997
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This phase 2 trial tests whether a drug called 177Lu-PSMA-617, which delivers radiation directly to prostate cancer cells, can slow cancer growth better than standard chemotherapy (docetaxel) in 200 men with advanced prostate cancer that has stopped responding to hormone therapy. The study compares progression-free survival between the two treatments.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
177Lu-PSMA-617 (a drug that delivers radiation directly to prostate cancer cells)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a more targeted treatment option for advanced prostate cancer that has stopped responding to hormone therapy, potentially slowing the disease better than standard chemotherapy.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 2 trial with only 200 participants, so results are preliminary. The drug may not prove more effective than chemotherapy, and radiation side effects are possible.
