First seen Feb 26, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 13 times
Summary
This study will test whether chewing xylitol-containing gum during pregnancy can reduce the risk of preterm birth and low birthweight. About 6,000 pregnant women in Malawi will be randomly assigned to chew gum with a high or low dose of xylitol, or a placebo gum. The goal is to see if xylitol improves oral health and leads to healthier pregnancies and babies.
