Can veggie vouchers and nutrition classes cut cancer risk?
NCT ID NCT04038385
First seen Sep 10, 2026 · Last updated Sep 11, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers test a program that pairs nutrition education with farmers' market vouchers for low-income mothers in the WIC program. The goal is to see if this helps them eat more vegetables, which may lower cancer risk. The study enrolls about 300 women at three WIC sites and measures vegetable intake and voucher use over six months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- a behavioral program that combines nutrition education with farmers' market vouchers
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could give WIC agencies a practical way to help low-income families eat more vegetables and possibly lower their long-term cancer risk.
- What could go wrong
- The program may not change eating habits enough to matter, and the study is small and limited to a few WIC sites, so the results might not apply everywhere.
