Virtual reality could make therapy easier for people who struggle to imagine

NCT ID NCT07171736

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 36 times

Summary

This study tests whether doing a schema therapy exercise in virtual reality feels different from the usual imagination-based version. Thirty healthy students will try both methods in one session. Researchers will measure emotions, self-compassion, and how real the experience feels, and interview participants about their preferences.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Virtual Reality chairwork exercise

What this could lead to

If VR-assisted exercises prove more effective or easier for people who struggle with imagination, this could improve how schema therapy is delivered.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study in healthy volunteers, not patients. Results may not apply to clinical populations, and VR may not offer clear benefits over standard methods.
