Radiation's hidden impact: how cancer treatment may trigger gum disease through viruses
NCT ID NCT02180932
First seen Mar 30, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 7 times
Summary
This study looked at 25 patients treated with radiation for head and neck cancers to see how the treatment changes viruses in the mouth, especially the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The goal was to understand why many patients develop severe gum disease after radiation. Researchers also studied the virus's behavior in lab experiments. The study did not test any new treatment, but aimed to gather knowledge for future care.
