Antidepressant venlafaxine put to the test against chronic back pain
NCT ID NCT07737158
First seen Jul 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 31, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether the antidepressant venlafaxine can reduce pain and improve function in adults with chronic non-specific low back pain. Participants receive either venlafaxine (up to 225 mg daily) plus routine care, or routine care alone, for three months. The study measures changes in pain intensity and daily functioning to see if the drug offers meaningful relief.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- the antidepressant drug venlafaxine
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a new treatment option for chronic low back pain, potentially reducing reliance on opioids.
- What could go wrong
- This is a mid-sized trial, and venlafaxine may cause side effects like nausea or dizziness. It is not yet proven effective for pain, and results may not apply to all patients.
