Summary
This study tests whether placing vancomycin powder directly into the surgical wound before closing it can prevent infections after open spine surgery. The trial includes 76 adults at high risk for infection due to spinal deformity, trauma, or tumor. Half receive the powder plus standard care, the other half standard care alone, and researchers track infection rates and side effects.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
vancomycin powder
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple, low-cost way to reduce surgical site infections in high-risk spine surgery patients.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 76 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Vancomycin can cause kidney problems or allergic reactions.
