Bronchoscope tip may spot collapsed lungs without X-Ray radiation
NCT ID NCT02907866
First seen Apr 06, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 8 times
Summary
This study explored whether the tip of a bronchoscope (a tube used to look inside the airways) can also be used as an ultrasound probe to detect a pneumothorax (collapsed lung). Normally, a chest X-ray is needed after certain procedures to check for this complication. The researchers tested this idea on 17 people, including those with and without pneumothorax, to see if the scope could spot signs like lung sliding or B-lines. If proven effective, this technique could save patients from unnecessary radiation.
