Simple blood test may replace fancy machine for septic shock care
NCT ID NCT07412366
First seen Feb 21, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 14 times
Summary
This study looks at whether the urea-to-creatinine ratio, a simple blood test, can help doctors understand the metabolic state of patients with septic shock. The goal is to see if this ratio can replace indirect calorimetry, a complex machine not always available in ICUs. Researchers will study 40 adults on ventilators in the ICU, measuring their energy use and blood markers over time. This is an observational study, meaning no new treatments are tested, but it could lead to easier monitoring and better nutrition care for critically ill patients.
