Smaller stent may prevent deadly bleeding with fewer brain side effects

NCT ID NCT07253389

First seen Jan 10, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This study compares two ways of placing a stent (a small tube) in the liver to prevent dangerous bleeding from enlarged veins in the throat and stomach in people with liver scarring (cirrhosis). The standard method uses a fully opened stent, while the experimental method uses a slightly smaller stent. The goal is to see if the smaller stent works just as well to stop bleeding but causes fewer brain-related side effects. About 170 adults with cirrhosis and recent severe bleeding will take part.
