Smaller balloon, bigger hope: new TIPS method may cut brain risks

NCT ID NCT07253389

First seen Jan 10, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 21 times

Summary

This study compares two ways of doing a TIPS procedure (a shunt placed in the liver) to prevent dangerous rebleeding from enlarged veins in the esophagus or stomach in people with cirrhosis. The standard method uses an 8-mm balloon to open the shunt, while the experimental method uses a smaller 6-mm balloon. Researchers think the smaller balloon may lower the risk of brain complications (hepatic encephalopathy) without increasing the chance of rebleeding. About 170 adults with cirrhosis and recent variceal bleeding will take part across multiple hospitals in China.
