Can a One-Hour talk reduce gun risk in the military?
NCT ID NCT05818696
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether adding a one-hour cognitive behavioral session focused on handling uncertainty to standard lethal means counseling helps active-duty service members store firearms more securely. One hundred participants who own unlocked, loaded guns will attend two sessions and complete daily surveys for 28 days. The goal is to see if the combined approach is acceptable and leads to safer storage practices.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Cognitive behavioral therapy for uncertainty (CUE) plus lethal means counseling (LMC)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a practical way to reduce firearm suicide risk in military members by helping them manage uncertainty and store guns more safely.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 100 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is brief and behavioral, so lasting changes in storage habits are uncertain.
