Ancient herbal mouthwash takes on modern standard for gum disease
NCT ID NCT07426393
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a mouthwash made from Triphala, an Ayurvedic herbal formula, works as well as the standard chlorhexidine mouthwash for reducing plaque and gum inflammation. 220 adults with mild to moderate gingivitis used one of the two mouthwashes twice daily for 30 days. Researchers measured plaque, gum health, and bleeding to see if Triphala could be a natural alternative with fewer side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Triphala mouthwash (6%) and chlorhexidine mouthwash (0.2%)
- What this could lead to
- If Triphala works as well as chlorhexidine, it could offer a natural, pleasant-tasting alternative for managing gum disease.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, completed trial with no phase designation, so results may not be widely applicable. Triphala may not be as effective as standard treatments.
