New feeding route may shield preemies' lungs from silent damage

NCT ID NCT03646045

First seen Jan 10, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This study tests whether feeding very small preterm babies (under 1500 grams) through a tube that goes past the stomach and into the small intestine can prevent tiny amounts of stomach fluid from getting into their lungs. The goal is to reduce lung inflammation in babies who need a breathing machine. Researchers will measure lung fluid markers to compare this method with standard stomach feeding.
