Summary
This study looked at 1,424 Veterans with high heart risk who had major surgery. It compared giving blood transfusions when hemoglobin drops below 10 (liberal strategy) versus below 7 (restrictive strategy). The goal was to see which approach better prevents serious problems like heart attack, kidney failure, or stroke within 90 days after surgery.
