New shunt study aims to boost survival in liver patients with severe fluid retention

NCT ID NCT06576934

First seen May 03, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study compares an early shunt procedure (TIPS) against standard care (diuretics and fluid drainage) in 134 adults with liver cirrhosis who have developed ascites (fluid buildup in the belly) for the first time. The goal is to see if TIPS improves survival without needing a liver transplant. Participants must be between 18 and 80 years old with moderate to severe ascites and a specific MELD score.
