New shunt study aims to boost survival in liver patients with severe swelling
NCT ID NCT06576934
First seen May 03, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 4 times
Summary
This study compares a procedure called TIPS (a shunt that reroutes blood in the liver) against standard treatments like water pills and fluid drainage for people with liver cirrhosis who have developed ascites (fluid buildup in the belly). The goal is to see if early TIPS placement helps patients live longer without needing a liver transplant. About 134 adults with moderate to severe ascites will take part.
