New blood thinner may protect hearts during artery surgery
NCT ID NCT02505399
First seen Jan 06, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 22 times
Summary
This study tested whether a newer blood thinner, ticagrelor, works better than the standard clopidogrel in patients getting a procedure to clear hardened calcium from heart arteries. 180 adults with stable heart disease were randomly assigned to receive either drug before and after the procedure. Researchers measured troponin levels, a marker of heart muscle damage, to see if ticagrelor reduces injury.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ticagrelor
What this could lead to
If ticagrelor works better than clopidogrel, it could reduce heart damage during this common procedure for hardened arteries.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed Phase 4 trial. Ticagrelor may not show a meaningful benefit over clopidogrel, and it carries a risk of bleeding.
