DNA detective work: can genes predict dangerous blood pressure spike from cancer drug?
NCT ID NCT02610413
First seen Mar 30, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 15 times
Summary
This study examines DNA from 354 breast cancer patients who took the drug bevacizumab. Some developed severe high blood pressure, while others did not. Researchers will compare their DNA to find genetic changes that might raise the risk of this side effect. The goal is to better understand who is at risk, not to test a new treatment.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors predict which patients are at risk for high blood pressure from bevacizumab, allowing safer treatment choices.
What could go wrong
This is an early exploratory study analyzing stored DNA samples, not testing a new treatment. It may not find clear genetic links, and any findings would need much more research before changing patient care.
