Statins show promise for slowing macular degeneration in new trial

NCT ID NCT04735263

First seen Jan 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 13, 2026 · Updated 17 times

Summary

This study tests whether high-dose atorvastatin (a statin drug) can improve vision in people with intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Researchers will measure how quickly participants' eyes adjust to darkness and track changes in fatty deposits (drusen) in the retina. The goal is to see if dark adaptation can serve as an early sign of treatment success. The study involves 21 participants and is currently recruiting.
