Can a simple text message save lives after a suicide attempt?

NCT ID NCT03069560

First seen Jan 06, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 27 times

Summary

This study tested whether it is practical for caregivers to send text messages to patients after a suicide attempt. 15 adults who had attempted suicide and their designated caregivers took part. The goal was to see if patients and caregivers found this SMS follow-up acceptable and easy to use. The results will help decide if a larger trial is possible.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

SMS text messages

What this could lead to

If this approach works, it could lead to a simple, low-cost way for caregivers to stay in touch with patients after a suicide attempt, potentially reducing repeat attempts.

What could go wrong

This is a very small feasibility study with only 15 participants. It does not measure whether SMS actually prevents suicide attempts, only if patients and caregivers find it acceptable.
