Simple dental exam before heart surgery may prevent deadly infections
NCT ID NCT07511673
First seen Apr 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 21, 2026 · Updated 13 times
Summary
This study is testing whether having a dental checkup before heart valve surgery can prevent serious complications like infection of the heart lining, repeat surgery, or death. About 1,300 adults scheduled for valve surgery will be randomly assigned to either get a dental screening or not. Researchers will then track their health for two years to see if the screening group has fewer problems.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
preoperative dental screening
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that a simple dental exam before heart valve surgery reduces the risk of life-threatening infections and the need for repeat surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a large trial, but it's still possible that dental screening won't significantly improve outcomes. The study is open-label, so both patients and doctors know which group they're in, which could introduce bias.
Conditions
