NCT ID NCT02703207
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 21, 2026 · Updated 31 times
Summary
This study looks at whether having both sleep apnea and COPD (called Overlap Syndrome) causes more thinking and memory problems in elderly veterans than having either condition alone. Researchers will test treatments like CPAP and extra oxygen to see if they improve brain function and quality of life. About 108 veterans aged 60 and older with moderate-to-severe sleep apnea and COPD will take part.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
positive airway pressure (CPAP) and supplemental oxygen
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could show that treating both sleep apnea and COPD together improves thinking and daily life in elderly veterans.
What could go wrong
This is an observational and early-stage treatment study with only 108 participants, so results may not apply to all. The cognitive tests may not capture real-world benefits.
