This study's is highlighted.

Recruitment status, easiest to join first

Recruiting now This study
This trial is taking on new participants right now.
Not yet recruiting
Registered, but not yet taking participants.
By invitation only
Not open to general applications. Only people the study team invites can take part.
Paused
Paused for now. It may or may not start again.
Ongoing
Running, but no longer taking on new participants.
Completed
The trial has finished. Results may not be published yet.
Stopped early
Stopped early, before it reached the end. That can be for many reasons, including safety.
Cancelled
Cancelled before anyone took part.

Expanded access (not trials)

Expanded access
Not a trial. This treatment can be requested outside a study, case by case, for people who qualify.
Expanded access (paused)
Not a trial. The treatment can normally be requested outside a study, but is unavailable right now.
Expanded access (ended)
Not a trial. The treatment could once be requested outside a study, but no longer can.
Approved
The treatment has been approved, so it is available normally rather than through this programme.

Summary

This study tests a new device called the SoniCracker IVL, which uses tiny shockwaves to break up hard calcium deposits in heart arteries. The goal is to make it easier to place stents and improve blood flow. About 40 adults with calcified coronary arteries will be enrolled. Researchers will check if the device can be delivered safely and if it leads to successful stent placement without major heart complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
SoniCracker IVL device (a catheter that delivers shockwaves to break up calcium in heart arteries)
What this could lead to
If successful, this device could offer a safer, more effective way to treat heavily calcified heart arteries, potentially reducing the risk of heart attacks and the need for repeat procedures.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early feasibility study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The device may fail to break up calcium or could cause artery damage, and long-term benefits are unknown.

Phase

Not a phased trial

Phase numbers describe drug development. The registry uses this when they do not apply, as it does for trials of devices, procedures or behaviour changes, and for observational studies.

Copied word for word from the study's registry entry, so the wording is the study team's rather than ours.

Inclusion Criteria: 1. Patients at age ≥ 21 years old. 2. Patients undergoing elective/ planned PCI with at least moderate coronary calcification on angiography at the target lesion are eligible for enrolment. Moderate coronary calcification is defined as densities on only one side of the arterial wall prior to contrast injection. Severe calcification was defined as radiopacities on both sides of the arterial wall prior to contrast injection. 3. Patients need to demonstrate evidence of either a 180 arc of coronary calcium or nodular calcium at the target lesion on intravascular imaging prior to IVL therapy. Exclusion Criteria: 1. Significant co-morbidities: * Cardiac arrest * Cardiogenic shock * Collapse / comatose / semi-conscious states 2. Patients requiring urgent or emergent PCI. 3. Patients who are unable to provide consent. 4. Patients who are pregnant. 5. Breast-feeding women 6. Any patients whom the Investigator deems unsuitable for the study (e.g., due to other medical reasons, laboratory abnormalities, expected study medication noncompliance, or subject's unwillingness to comply with all study-related study procedures).
