New hospital risk scores aim to spot sepsis and sudden deterioration earlier
NCT ID NCT06779617
First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 38 times
Summary
This study is testing two new risk scores that predict a patient's chance of developing sepsis or experiencing a sudden decline (like cardiac arrest or death) within the next 4 hours. The scores give a simple 1-to-4 color-coded risk level to alert hospital staff. The goal is to see if providing these scores helps doctors and nurses check on high-risk patients sooner. The trial will involve about 150,000 adult patients across multiple hospitals in the University of Maryland Medical System.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
clinical decision support tool (SEPSys Score and RESCUE Score)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help hospitals identify patients at risk of sepsis or sudden decline earlier, potentially saving lives.
What could go wrong
This is a large pragmatic trial testing a prediction tool, not a treatment. The scores may not improve outcomes or could lead to unnecessary alarms.
Conditions
