Heart valve study: is being awake during procedure safer than full anesthesia?

NCT ID NCT04347603

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 26 times

Summary

This study looked at 218 people with severe aortic stenosis who needed a heart valve replacement through a tube in their leg (TAVI). Researchers compared two approaches: general anesthesia (being fully asleep) versus local anesthesia with sedation (being awake but relaxed). The goal was to see if general anesthesia was as safe as sedation in terms of complications and recovery within the first 72 hours. The findings help doctors choose the best anesthesia method for each patient.
