Magnetic brain zaps aim to lift depression in schizophrenia

NCT ID NCT05671185

First seen Jan 22, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study tests whether a non-invasive brain stimulation technique called repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can reduce depression, negative symptoms, and improve thinking in people with schizophrenia. About 180 adults with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who also have depressive symptoms will receive either high-frequency rTMS, intermittent theta burst stimulation (a faster form of rTMS), or a sham treatment. The goal is to find a new way to help when standard antidepressants don't work well.
