Pumping iron for the heart: study tests resistance training in women with coronary artery disease
NCT ID NCT07354399
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether adding resistance training (like squats and pulling exercises with weights) to standard cycling workouts can improve fitness and muscle mass in women with coronary artery disease. Fifty women who have had a heart attack or heart procedure will take part in a 12-week cardiac rehab program, doing either cycling alone or cycling plus weight training at normal or slow speed. Researchers will measure changes in aerobic capacity, lean body mass, and strength to see which approach works best.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- exercise training (aerobic interval cycling and resistance training with weights)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that adding resistance training to standard cardiac rehab improves muscle mass and fitness more than aerobic training alone for women with heart disease.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase study with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to all women. Exercise interventions also depend heavily on adherence and individual fitness levels.
