Can a friend save a life? new study trains loved ones to fight opioid stigma and overdose

NCT ID NCT06823453

First seen Feb 28, 2026 · Last updated May 17, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study aims to reduce opioid overdose deaths on Chicago's West side by training non-drug-using friends and family members of people who use opioids to become harm reduction champions. Participants will learn about harm reduction tools like naloxone and fentanyl test strips, and will be paired with a loved one who uses opioids to have a counselor-led conversation about safety. The goal is to increase access to life-saving services, reduce stigma, and lower overdose rates in a community hard hit by the opioid crisis.
