NCT ID NCT05305313

First seen May 02, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study tests whether dosing the anesthetic propofol based on adjusted body weight is better than total body weight for obese patients. Using a computer-controlled system, researchers will monitor brain activity to maintain the right depth of anesthesia. The goal is to avoid overdosing and improve recovery. Forty-six obese adults undergoing surgery will participate.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Propofol

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to safer, more precise anesthesia dosing for obese patients, reducing risks like overdose or delayed recovery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study with only 46 participants, so results may not apply to all obese patients or surgeries. The closed-loop system may also have technical limitations.
