Summary

This completed study tested a smartphone-based program to help 520 low-income smokers quit. Participants received nicotine patches and lozenges, plus automated app content and phone counseling. The goal was to see if this approach could boost quit rates in a hard-to-reach population.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
nicotine patch and nicotine lozenge
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could provide an effective, scalable way to help low-income smokers quit, reducing smoking-related diseases.
What could go wrong
The trial is completed but results are not yet widely reported. The intervention relies on self-reported abstinence, which may overestimate success, and the smartphone requirement may limit reach.
