Probiotics may stop autoimmune diseases before they start
NCT ID NCT04014660
First seen Apr 14, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This study tested whether giving a daily mix of two friendly bacteria (Lactobacillus paracasei and Lactobacillus plantarum) to children who had early signs of autoimmunity could prevent them from developing celiac disease, type 1 diabetes, or thyroid disease. The researchers enrolled 202 children who tested positive for autoantibodies linked to these conditions. The goal was to see if the probiotics could calm the immune system and protect the gut, potentially stopping the disease process before it starts.
