NCT ID NCT07235826

First seen Nov 19, 2025 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 29 times

Summary

This study tests whether a probiotic called Streptococcus salivarius Evol12, taken as a daily dissolving tablet, can reduce how often children aged 3 to 11 get tonsillitis. Two hundred children with a history of frequent tonsillitis will receive either the probiotic or a placebo for three months, then switch treatments for another three months. Researchers will track episodes, antibiotic use, and school absences to see if the probiotic helps.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, daily probiotic to help prevent frequent tonsillitis in children, reducing the need for antibiotics or surgery.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with only 200 children, and the effect may be small or no better than placebo. Probiotics can sometimes cause mild digestive upset.
