Old gout drug may help people with chronic pain quit opioids

NCT ID NCT04939623

First seen May 03, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 5 times

Summary

This study tests whether probenecid, a safe drug already used for gout, can reduce the unpleasant symptoms of opioid withdrawal. About 40 adults with chronic pain who are voluntarily lowering their opioid dose will receive probenecid or a placebo. The goal is to see if probenecid is well-tolerated and helps make tapering easier.
