Could a gout drug help people safely quit opioids?
NCT ID NCT04939623
First seen May 03, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This study tests whether probenecid, a safe drug already used for gout, can reduce the unpleasant symptoms of opioid withdrawal in people with chronic pain who are voluntarily lowering their opioid dose. About 40 adults will receive either probenecid or a placebo to see if it helps them taper more comfortably. The goal is to provide a new, accessible option to support people struggling to reduce their opioid use.
