Mouthwash for moms: simple oral care could save thousands of tiny newborns

NCT ID NCT07553286

First seen Apr 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 08, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This study tests whether a simple, low-cost oral health program for pregnant women in rural Nepal can reduce the number of babies born too early, too small, or underweight. About 2,280 women will either receive daily antiseptic mouthwash and intensive oral hygiene education, or just a toothbrush and toothpaste. If it works, this easy-to-use package could help prevent serious newborn health problems in areas with limited healthcare.
