Eye-Opening clue: ultrasound of the optic nerve may predict spinal headache after C-Section
NCT ID NCT07729449
First seen Jul 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 28, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether measuring the optic nerve sheath diameter with ultrasound can predict post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) in women undergoing elective cesarean delivery under spinal anesthesia. Researchers will also monitor brain oxygen levels to see if drops in oxygen relate to headache risk. If a reliable cutoff value is found, it could help doctors identify high-risk patients early and take preventive steps.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could give doctors a simple, non-invasive way to predict who is at risk for post-dural puncture headache after spinal anesthesia, allowing earlier preventive care.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study with 44 participants, so the findings may not apply to all patients. The predictive value of the measurements may be too low to be clinically useful.
