Study aims to end needless treatments for preemie heart condition
NCT ID NCT03782610
First seen Mar 13, 2026 · Last updated May 18, 2026 · Updated 12 times
Summary
This study follows 526 preterm infants born before 30 weeks who have a condition called patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), where a fetal blood vessel stays open too long. Researchers want to find out which babies will close this vessel on their own and which ones are at risk for serious problems like lung disease or developmental delays. By tracking heart ultrasound readings and blood/urine markers over the first month, they hope to create a tool that helps doctors decide when treatment is truly needed and when it can be safely avoided.
