Summary
This study tested a new procedure called POEM (Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy) to help people with achalasia, a condition that makes swallowing difficult. In POEM, doctors cut the tight muscle at the bottom of the esophagus using a thin tube passed through the mouth. The goal was to relieve trouble swallowing. The study included 100 patients who were candidates for standard surgery.
