First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 27 times
Summary
This study tested a new treatment called POEM for people with achalasia, a condition where the esophagus doesn't relax properly, making swallowing difficult. In POEM, doctors cut the tight muscle at the bottom of the esophagus using a thin tube passed through the mouth. The goal was to see if this procedure could relieve swallowing problems in 100 patients who were already candidates for standard surgery.
