Plasma swap shows promise for deadly sepsis in early trial
NCT ID NCT04057872
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 27 times
Summary
This early-stage study tested whether a procedure called therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is safe for adults with septic shock, a life-threatening infection that causes organ failure. Seventeen patients received TPE within 24 hours of diagnosis, where their blood plasma was removed and replaced with fluids or blood products. The main goal was to check for side effects and see if patients could complete the treatment, not to prove it works as a cure.
