First seen Feb 27, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This early-stage study tests a new approach to support people with acute-on-chronic liver failure, a life-threatening condition where the liver suddenly stops working. The treatment uses a genetically-modified pig liver connected to a special machine that cleans the blood outside the body. Up to 20 adults who are not eligible for a transplant will be monitored for safety and signs of liver function improvement.
