Personalized vitamin plan may shield pregnant women from high blood pressure

NCT ID NCT04723836

First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 33 times

Summary

This study tests whether giving vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and a form of folate (5-MTHF) to pregnant women with a specific gene variant can prevent high blood pressure. About 2250 women in their first trimester are being recruited. Those with the gene variant receive the vitamins or a placebo from week 16 until delivery. The goal is to find a simple, non-drug way to manage blood pressure in pregnancy.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (a form of folate)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could lead to a simple, non-drug way to prevent high blood pressure during pregnancy for women with a specific gene variant.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial focused on a specific gene variant, so results may not apply to all pregnant women. The supplements may not lower blood pressure as hoped.
