New pain block technique may reduce opioid use after chest surgery

NCT ID NCT06361121

First seen Feb 25, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

This study tested two types of nerve blocks to control pain after chest surgery (thoracotomy) in 180 adults. One method is a standard paravertebral block, and the other is a newer, potentially safer mid-point block. The goal was to see if the newer block provides similar pain relief while reducing the need for strong painkillers like fentanyl.
