Nerve block before thyroid surgery cuts opioid use, study finds

NCT ID NCT07496970

First seen May 03, 2026 · Last updated Jun 17, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study tested whether a numbing injection (nerve block) given before thyroid surgery could lower pain and reduce the need for strong painkillers. Forty adults having their thyroid removed under general anesthesia took part. Half received the nerve block plus standard care, the other half only standard care. Researchers measured pain scores and how much opioid medication was needed after surgery.
