Which painkiller works best after gallbladder surgery? new study aims to find out
NCT ID NCT07203794
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 32 times
Summary
This study compares three common pain relief methods for people having laparoscopic gallbladder surgery: numbing the surgical area with bupivacaine, a nerve block in the back (ESP block), or a small dose of morphine into the spinal fluid. The goal is to see which method reduces pain and the need for opioid painkillers the most. About 132 adults will take part, and the results could help improve recovery after this routine surgery.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bupivacaine and morphine
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could identify the most effective pain relief method for gallbladder surgery, reducing opioid use and speeding recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (132 participants) comparing existing techniques, so results may not apply to all patients or settings. Each method carries risks like nausea, allergic reactions, or nerve block complications.
